Changing private banks: what should you ask before deciding?

Before changing private banks, identify what needs to improve and confirm the terms of the new relationship. Transferring assets is a separate step: it must be arranged with the institutions involved, taking existing mandates and commitments into account.

Should you change banks or change the service?

Slow responses, unclear reporting and a mandate that no longer meets your expectations are different problems. Write down two or three specific examples, then ask your existing contact what can change. This lets you compare a concrete improvement with a new relationship.

Express your expectation in one sentence: “I want clearer cost reporting and an available contact for my international projects.” An observable need helps the discussion; simply looking for the best bank is too vague.

Can securities be transferred without selling them?

Ask both institutions which securities can be transferred in their existing form, which need review and which transactions would remain possible during the transfer. Do not assume every holding is accepted. Clarify fees, estimated timing and any periods of unavailability.

If a sale is being considered, have its consequences reviewed before placing an order. Charles does not decide portfolio changes or transmit transfer instructions on your behalf.

What if you already have a loan or management mandate?

Tell the professionals handling the transition about pledged assets, loans and existing mandates. Ask which permissions, terminations or replacement arrangements would be needed. Opening a new account does not automatically end existing commitments.

What should be confirmed before starting the move?

Prepare a simple record: acceptance of the new relationship, confirmed services, quoted costs, transferable assets, responsibilities and next review date. Any missing answer remains an open issue. Do not confuse an agreement in principle with a transition ready to execute.
