Luxembourg life insurance: what should you ask before taking out a policy?

Before considering Luxembourg life insurance, clarify the policy’s purpose, availability from your country of residence, costs and risks. The insurer’s country alone does not determine whether a policy fits your circumstances.

What need should the policy address?

Distinguish saving objectives, succession planning and the possibility of moving countries. Describe what you want to achieve before asking for a product. The authorised professional should explain which matters concern the policy, the selected investments and a separate legal or tax analysis.

Which risks and protections should you distinguish?

Ask what is guaranteed, by whom, on which date and under which conditions. Distinguish investment risk, insurer-related risk and applicable protection mechanisms. A description of policyholder protection should not be interpreted as a general guarantee against market losses.

Request pre-contractual documentation and, where applicable, the key information document. Note its risks, intended holding period and costs; ask for explanations of anything unclear before deciding.

How do you understand costs and access funds?

Ask for a breakdown of policy, underlying investment, management and transaction fees. Request an illustration from the distributor with explicit assumptions. A single advertised rate does not show the total you will pay.

Then ask about access: “If my plans change, how do I request a partial or full surrender?” Clarify timing, restrictions, possible charges and consequences to review with your tax adviser. A surrender option does not necessarily mean immediate or cost-free access.

What should you check about beneficiaries and a future move?

Ask how the beneficiary clause can be drafted and changed, and who will review its consistency with your family circumstances. If you plan to move, ask how the new country could affect the policy and its administration. Do not assume universal portability.
